Hi. Take a look at these sentences, I’m in doubt about using or not the preposition “the”.
> I just got back from camp (sentence from the podcast)
> I just got back from farm / I just got back from the farm
> I just got back from town / I just got back from the town
> I just got back from movies / I just got back from the movies
> I just got back from soccer game / I just got back from the soccer game
Could you help me?
Thanks in advance.
Hello, Robert!
When you talk about a specific place, you need to use “the”: the farm, the movies, the soccer game.
When I said “from camp”, I wasn’t talking about “a campsite, the campsite”, I was talking about a common activity: Camp. It’s common to say “I went to camp”, etc. in English (without the article). The same goes for “town”. It’s more common to say “I got back from town.” (I don’t really know why; it’s just a common way of saying it.)
