Yesterday I was reading several news reports about the terrible storm that hit the east coast of the United States, and all of them used a phrasal verb that I already taught you: bear down on.

It is reported that this storm could be one of the biggest storms in the history of the United States. Let me show you a little segment from chapter 4.

Notice this phrase: “Oh, no! He is bearing down on poor little Firepop.” My sister Lisa translated this sentence like this: “Oh não! Ele está encostando no coitadinho do Firepop”. Actually the phrasal verb “Bear down on someone” or “Bear down on something” has a __________ meaning than simply “encostando”. It means “To move in a __________  way towards someone or something.” Look at this example from Cambridge Dictionary: “I looked up to see the car __________ down on me”. That means that the car was coming in my direction in a threatening way.

Why am I reviewing this phrasal verb that you should have learned in our second story? Well, this is one phrasal verb that is being used a lot in the news to describe this __________ storm.

Look at FOX NEWS for example. Let’s scroll down and it says: “Hurricane Sandy bears down on east coast” that means it´s arriving, it´s __________ the east coast in a threatening way. I was reading CNN and it´s talking about the presidential debates, and it says that Romney wants more responsibility for emergency management in states. Mitt Romney’s comments about the federal emergency management agency made at a CNN republican primary debate in June, 2011, are receiving __________ attention Monday as hurricane Sandy bears down east coast. Once again, “bears down on the east coast“. That means “It´s approaching the east coast in a threatening way”.

Here´s a new application that I read on my iPad every day called “The Daily”, and its main headline “__________ Yourself. Huge Hurricane Sandy Bears Down On East Coast”.

Let me give you one more from a famous political blog, Drudge Report: “Candidates shift __________ as Sandy bears down on east coast”. So once again I __________ the importance of phrasal verbs if you really want to understand English, if you want to understand even the news in English. You´ve got to learn these phrasal verbs.
