Hello, it’s Tim Barrett from www.domineingles.com.br. Well, Christmas is __________ , the goose is getting fat. That’s a song in English; I’ll play it for you.

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat
Please put a penny in the old man’s hat
If you haven’t got a penny, then a ha’penny will do
If you haven’t got a ha’penny, then God bless you!

And I’m afraid I’m going to get fat, too, if I’m not __________ . I was thinking about all the things I want to eat during Christmas time. We’re going to have the traditional Christmas dinner with __________ , stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and lots of other __________ . Plus the ladies will be making Christmas cookies, and we’ll have a lot of panetones here in Brazil; so it’s a time where, if we’re not careful, we can ________ a lot of weight.

So I was thinking that I’d better start __________ down _____ a few things before the Holidays are here. Do you know what the phrasal verb “cut down on” means? It means to reduce the amount or quantity of something you spend, or in this case, eat.

So I was trying to think: What could I ______ down on these days? I guess I could cut ______ on popcorn; I love to eat popcorn at night after classes. I could cut down on ___________ , and not eat desserts and chocolates for a few days. I just want to make ______ that I have enough space for all the Christmas goodies that are coming up.

So tell me about you(rself). Are you going to cut down on anything these days, before the Holiday festivities? What are you going to cut down on? Write about it in our comments section on our site; ok? I’ll see you there. Bye bye.

SCRIPT WITH TRANSLATIONS AND EXPLANATIONS

Hello, it’s Tim Barrett from www.domineingles.com.br. Well, Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. That’s a song in English; I’ll play it for you.

  • Christmas is coming = o natal está chegando
  • the goose is getting fat = o ganso está engordando
  • I’ll play it for you = vou tocá-la para você

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat
Please put a penny in the old man’s hat
If you haven’t got a penny, then a ha’penny will do
If you haven’t got a ha’penny, then God bless you!

  • put a penny in the old man’s hat = coloque um centavo no chapéu do velhinho
  • if you haven’t got a penny = se você não tiver um centavo
  • a ha’penny will do = um “meio-centavo” [moeda antiga na Inglaterra] serve
  • then God bless you = então Deus lhe abençoe (ou “Deus lhe pague” no Brasil :))

And I’m afraid I’m going to get fat, too, if I’m not careful. I was thinking about all the things I want to eat during Christmas time. We’re going to have the traditional Christmas dinner with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and lots of other goodies. Plus the ladies will be making Christmas cookies, and we’ll have a lot of panetones here in Brazil; so it’s a time where, if we’re not careful, we can gain a lot of weight.

  • I’m afraid I’m going to get fat, too = eu temo que vou engordar, também
  • if I’m not careful = se não tomar cuidado
  • during Christmas time = durante a época de natal
  • turkey = peru
  • stuffing = “farofa” americana, um tipo de recheio que é colocada dentro do peru e servido como acompanhamento.
  • mash potatoes = purê de batata
  • gravy = molho para por em cima da batata e peru
  • pumpkin pie = torta de abobora
  • lots of other goodies = muitas outras guloseimas
  • plus = além disso
  • will be making = estarão fazendo [gerundismo é comum em inglês 🙂 ]; farão
  • Christmas cookies = biscoitos de natal
  • we can gain a lot of weight = podemos ganhar muito peso

So I was thinking that I’d better start cutting down on a few things before the Holidays are here. Do you know what the phrasal verb “cut down on” means? It means to reduce the amount or quantity of something you spend, or in this case, eat.
[blocknote class=”red” title=”O que significa o phrasal verb ‘cut down on (something)’”] Como se diz “cut down on (something)” em português? Qual é a tradução de ” cut down on (something) “? What does ” cut down on (something) ” mean? What is the meaning of ” cut down on (something) “?

  • cut down on (something) = reduzir, diminuir, cortar (os custos, a comida, etc.), usar menos, economizar

[/blocknote]

  • the holidays = as festas do fim do ano
  • reduce the amount = reduzir a quantia
  • of something you spend or eat = de algo que você gasta ou come

So I was trying to think: What could I cut down on these days? I guess I could cut down on popcorn; I love to eat popcorn at night after classes. I could cut down on desserts, and not eat desserts and chocolates for a few days. I just want to make sure that I have enough space for all the Christmas goodies that are coming up.

  • I just want to make sure I have enough space = só quero ter certeza de que terei espaço suficiente
  • Christmas goodies = gulozeimas de natal
  • That are coming up = que estão chegando
