Ontem estava trabalhando no meu computador quando meu filho de 10 anos veio com um saco de batatas fritas na mão, e me perguntou:
(“Supper” para nós de Pennsylvania é “dinner” para outros.) Eu também estava com fome, então além de dar permissão para ele comer os chips, eu também “helped myself to a few“.
- helped myself to a few = me servi de alguns, peguei alguns para mim
Depois de limparmos (“wipe out“) todo o saco de chips, eu disse:

- A primeira frase, “hold (me) over“, é um PHRASAL VERB; pois possue um verbo “hold” (que sozinho significa “segurar”) e a partícula “over“. Juntos formam outro significado.
hold (me/you/him/us, etc.) over, phrasal verb = me/lhe/nos ajudar a “aguentar” até a próxima refeição; “forrar o estômago”
- A segunda frase, “hit the spot“, é uma expressão idiomática. Não se trata de um Phrasal Verb pois não é formado por um verbo com uma particula, mas sim por uma frase cujo significado não é deduzível dos significados das palavras que a compõem.
That hit the spot! = Isso era exatamente o que eu precisava para satisfazer a minha fome neste momento!; “Era tudo o que eu precisava!”; (That would hit the spot! = Cairia bem!)
Um exemplo de uma expressão em português seria “bicho de sete cabeças” que é usado para significar “algo difícil”. [/blocknote] Apesar de alguns Phrasal Verbs serem maneiras informais de dizer alguma coisa e consequentemente considerados “expressões”, MUITOS deles não se tratam de expressões propriamente ditas, pois são a única maneira de expressar uma certa ação ou um certo conceito.

When I’m hungry during the day, i usually eat some biscuits with some cups of coffee to hold me over until lunch. When i’m hungry before i go to bed, i usually eat something which isn’t healthy, as well. That hits the spot! Actually, i know i need to drink less coffee during the day. Because of it i’m getting black for drinking so much coffee!kkkk
