Tim, Now is 18:00 PM. You told us about the probality of sayng o’clock. May be from ” of the clock”. What do you think of might be from “on the clock” because they were on the wall?

Hello, José Luiz! I read that, years ago, people would say “of the clock” to distinguish it from another kind of “time”, like the sundial (sun time), for example.
