  When we came to Brazil, my parents (father and mother), who are Baptist missionaries, had to learn Portuguese in 10 months. (I was younger, so I learned in a regular school.) My parents’ course consisted of what they called “grupos” – on one side of the page there were questions and answers in English, and on the other side, in Portuguese. They had to fold the page, look at the English side, and say the questions and answers in Portuguese in a certain time limit. That’s how we “came up with” (created) the “Método dos Missionários”. We say each sentence of the story in Portuguese, and the student has to say the sentence in English, quickly, before hearing the answer. That’s a fast way to gain fluency in a language.
  
  Quando viemos para o Brasil, meus pais, que são missionários batistas, tiveram que aprender português em 10 meses. (Eu era mais jovem, então aprendi em uma escola normal.) O curso dos meus pais consistia no que eles chamavam de “grupos” – em um lado da página havia perguntas e respostas em inglês e, no outro lado, em português. Eles tinham que dobrar a página, olhar para o lado em inglês e dizer as perguntas e respostas em português em um determinado limite de tempo. Foi assim que “criamos” o “Método dos Missionários”. Dizemos cada frase da história em português, e o aluno tem que dizer a frase em inglês, rapidamente, antes de ouvir a resposta. Essa é uma maneira rápida de ganhar fluência em um idioma.

  Actually, we have products for more advanced students (the Phrasal Verb series, the Culture & Expression series), and a lot of people would write asking us for a “Basic English” series, using our “Método dos Missionários”, so they could get started.
  
  Na verdade, temos produtos para alunos mais avançados (a série Phrasal Verbs, a séria Cultura e Expressões), e muitos nos escreviam pedindo uma séria para “Inglês Básico”, utilizando o nosso “Método dos Missionários”, para que pudessem iniciar.

Tim, I have a question, why is it so hard to understand movies in English?

  Hi, Denilson. In movies, dialogues are very fast and scripted. It’s normal to have a hard time understanding them when you are learning English. Just keep watching and learning, and you will get better and better at it!
