Hi. It’s Tim here again. I know I’ve been speaking a lot about politics these days; but you know that elections are __________ ______ in the United States these days, so I’ve been reading a lot about it. Well, I follow several political commentators to see what’s happening; and there’s one called Dick Morris – I listen to him every day. He used to be an _________ for the Clintons during the Clinton administration, but he’s not a great fan of them now. And he was talking about a new global tax that Hilary Clinton, who is the Secretary of State, was trying to get passed in the United Nations, that would end up taxing a lot of American rich people. According to Dick Morris, Hilary didn’t mean to reveal this yet, but she let it _______ . And he [Dick Morris] used an expression to say this that I taught you a long time ago: Let the cat out of the bag. Listen to his comment, and then I’ll review this expression with you.
Dick Morris: Hilary Clinton let the cat out of the bag this week. She gave a speech at the Global Initiative of her husband’s where she said that the __________ , the rich of the world, do not pay their “fair share of taxes”, and that they should pay it; and she called for “global tax reform” to make sure that they do pay their “fair share of taxes”.
Tim: “Let the cat out of the bag” means to ___________ a secret, especially when you didn’t _________ to, when you didn’t intend to reveal that secret. So let’s suppose you are trying to keep a secret about a party that’s __________ ______ , but your sister “let the cat out of the bag” – she told somebody about it before she was supposed to.
So go to our site; learn this expression. Tell us about a time when you or someone you know let the cat out of the bag. I’ll see you there. Bye bye.

Hi. It’s Tim here again. I know I’ve been speaking a lot about politics these days; but you know that elections are coming up in the United States these days, so I’ve been reading a lot about it. Well, I follow several political commentators to see what’s happening; and there’s one called Dick Morris – I listen to him every day. He used to be an advisor for the Clintons during the Clinton administration, but he’s not a great fan of them now. And he was talking about a new global tax that Hilary Clinton, who is the Secretary of State, was trying to get passed in the United Nations, that would end up taxing a lot of American rich people. According to Dick Morris, Hilary didn’t mean to reveal this yet, but she let it slip. And he [Dick Morris] used an expression to say this that I taught you a long time ago: Let the cat out of the bag. Listen to his comment, and then I’ll review this expression with you.

How about you? Please tell us about a time when you (or someone you know) let the cat out of the bag.
Muito boa lição, como sempre, Tim!
Parabéns pelo site, newletter, página no Facebook e canal Youtube!
You guys rock! 😉
Thank you so much for following us on all these social networks! So glad you are enjoying it!
Hi, Tim.
Well, whenever an American Authority describes something as a “global effect”, does it mean it’s going to affect all the world? If it’s so, we’re in trouble! But your video says it would end up taxing a lot of American rich people. Maybe it’s only in US. I don’t know.
I’d say it’s hard to believe she just let the cat out of the bag. Couldn’t she do it deliberately? A way of seing what people would think about it. Global Tax Reform? Let’s hope she doesn’t get it passed on. No more taxes going into effect. We Brazilians have been experiencing lots of them in our daily lives. Such a nightmare!
Current news on US politics? I’ve just read somewhere Barack Obama’s lacklustre performance in first debate was worse than Carter in 1980. Oh, man!
Hello, Fábio! The reason why Dick Morris thought she “let the cat out of the bag” is that this was not supposed to come up until *after* the elections, when there was no danger of it backfiring and hurting Obama’s chance of reelection. It would affect billionaires all over the world, and eventually millionaires. I don’t think it would affect you and me personally (at least me! 🙂 ), but I am against taking more money from *anyone*, no matter how much they make. Just let us be free and work and keep our own money (except for taxes we all need to pay for basic services.) The problem is also that these taxes will go to corrupt governments and rulers – how will that help the poor?
vamos pedir a Deus que vença o melhor para os Estados Unidos e melhore a economia sem tirar dos americanos . mexer no bolso não é solução política das melhores . Aterra da àguia tem que alçar Voo mais alto dos penhascos !
Thank you for your concern and interest, Maria! You’re right. We’re praying that God’s will be done.
Firstly, thank you for this nice lesson. I remember when you taught us about this expression.I´m sure I already “let the cat out of the bag” sometimes, but only in minor things.I´m good about keeping secrets when people ask me that. I don´t know if I´m right but I think Obama´s going to be reelected, and then I hope he´s better than his opponent. I completely agree with you in your answer to Fábio, about the too high taxes we pay.God bless you!
Thank you for writing, Alzira! I’m not so sure about who will win the election. The polls are pretty tight right now (contrary to what the news programs say here in Brazil.)
Hi, Tim! I remember when you taught about this idiom. I am sure I “let the cat out of the bag” sometimes, but only in minor events. I am good at keeping secrets when I am asked to do that. Thank you very much for your good will in helping us to improve our learning. I just love your job. God bless you!
Thank you, Alzira! Your kind words encourage us to keep on teaching! Speaking about secrets, I guess the best way to keep a secret is not to tell anyone. Someone will eventually “let the cat out of the bad”, for sure.
Hi Tim,i’m fan of you. well, two years ago, my teacher let the cat out of the bag when he reavel a question that came up in the test and we all stay glad a lot. sorry my broken english!
No need to apologize, Gilmar! You did great! And I am sure you were very glad that your teacher let the cat out of the bag. 🙂
I am happy for you share your knowledge with me.
unhappily my computer sound is damaged, and i don’t can hear your video post.
but, i am to accompany your message.
Thank you for your comment, Dirceu! I hope you get your computer working soon so you can hear the audio. Good luck with your studies!
