I was watching an episode of the television series Hoarding: Buried Alive. It’s a documentary series that follows hoarders and tries to help them manage their illness. In today’s episode, I heard a phrasal verb that I taught you already. See if you can remember it below.

The man in this episode had a son and a daughter who were trying to convince him to clean up his place.

• they were trying to convince him = eles estavam tentando convencê-lo
• to clean up his place = limpar o lugar onde ele morava

The older daughter was getting frustrated because her dad had two other younger kids, but it was impossible to make him understand what she was trying to say. She finally said, “There is no g_____ t___ to him!” [ “Não dá pra falar com ele! Ele nunca vai entender!”]

• the older daughter was getting frustrated = a filha mais velha estava ficando frustrada
• because her dad had two other younger kids = porque o pai dela tinha outros dois filhos mais novos
• it was impossible to make him understand what she was trying to say = era impossível fazê-lo entender o que ela estava tentando dizer

My dad doesn’t really care at all; so I’m worried for his kids. He’s an unfit parent; he shouldn’t be allowed to have kids.

If you really cared about Charlie, you would have done it already; but apparently you don’t care – you do not care.

Se ele não tivesse nenhum filho, eu provavelmente deixaria ele lá dentro sentado. Deixaria ele sozinho. Porque não consigo lidar com ele. Não dá pra falar com ele; ele nunca vai entender! A única coisa que vai funcionar é quando ele perder os filhos dele. Aí ele vai cair na real.
