I just read the poem, and noticed that there are a few mistakes. It should be: “There was a stone; there was a stone, etc.”
I imagine that “way is better than road”! Tim and Drummond decide on this subject.
Yes, although it is not very common to say it like that in English. Americans would mostly just say “There was a stone in my path.”
