Hi, Vera. When you say something “cracks you up”, you are saying that you think it is funny, it makes you laugh. If it “cracked you up” (in the past), it made you laugh. Now if you say that “you couldn’t help laughing”, you are talking about a specific thing that made you laugh a lot, so much that you couldn’t stop laughing. They are similar expressions.

I know it’s related to distance, but I’ve seen people using those even with close objects, for example.
In the example you gave, if Calvin had said “these” instead of “those,” would it be wrong?
In this case, he is talking about letters in the newspaper, and the newspaper is not close to them. If he were looking at the newspaper, and the newspaper was in his hand, he would probably say “these letters”.
