Hello, it’s Tim here from www.domineingles.com.br. It’s ________ a long time since we’ve seen each other. What have you been ______ to? Well, I’ve been busy with lots of projects and trips. But it’s good to see you again. I would say we have a lot of catching up to do! And that’s the expression I want to teach you today: We have a lot of catching up to do.
What does that mean? Well, I believe you are __________ with the phrasal verb “catch up”, which means to bring a person up to _______ on all the latest news. So I can say to you:
“Let’s go for a coffee – I want to _______ you _____ ____ all the latest gossip.”.
So that means I want to tell you all that happened since the last time we were together.
Now, let’s ______ _______ to the initial sentence: We have a lot of catching up to do. It uses the phrasal verb “catch up”, but in a specific way, and with a specific ___________ – which our friend Denilso de Lima from www.inglesnapontadalingua.com.br likes to call collocations, which are sequences of words that are usually used together.
So what does it mean when you say,
“We have a lot of catching up to do.”?
Well, it basically means that we have a lot to talk about because we haven’t _______ each other in a long time.
I did a quick internet search and I found two _______ – one from a movie, I believe, and another from a series – which use this phrase “we have a lot of catching up to do”. I haven’t watched them personally, so I can’t say if I _____________ them or not; but I just wanted you to see this expression being used in a real situation, in context. So let’s watch it together.
—
– Hey dad.
– What’s up, cuz?
– Sup to cuz?
– What is up, cousin?
– I am sure you two boys have got a lot of ____________ up to do; but do not make it a _______ night. School starts tomorrow.
– Yeah, I got a dozen texts from people talking about your ____________ entrance this morning. Too _______ Smithson High does not have a parachute club.
– It is not a joke to me.
– Okay.
—
– Emma.
– Looks like we have some ____________ up to do.
– You have no idea.
– How about dinner at Granny’s. On me.
– As _______ as it’s not Chimera, I’m in. Hey, kid. You hungry?
– Yeah. See you later.
So, as I said in the beginning, we have a lot of catching up to do. Tell me: What have you been up to? Tell me about it on our site; OK? See you there. Bye, bye.

SCRIPT WITH TRANSLATIONS AND EXPLANATIONS
Hello, it’s Tim here from www.domineingles.com.br. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen each other. What have you been up to? Well, I’ve been busy with lots of projects and trips. But it’s good to see you again. I would say we have a lot of catching up to do! And that’s the expression I want to teach you today: We have a lot of catching up to do.

- i’ve been busy = ando ocupado
- trips = viagens
- i would say = eu diria
- we have a lot of catching up to do = (ver explicação abaixo)
What does that mean? Well, I believe you are familiar with the phrasal verb “catch up”, which means to bring a person up to date on all the latest news. So I can say to you:
“Let’s go for a coffee – I want to catch you up on all the latest gossip.”
So that means I want to tell you all that happened since the last time we were together.

- so that means = então isto significa
- all that happened = tudo o que aconteceu
- since the last time = desde a última vez
Now, let’s get back to the initial sentence: We have a lot of catching up to do. It uses the phrasal verb “catch up”, but in a specific way, and with a specific wording – which our friend Denilso de Lima from www.inglesnapontadalingua.com.br likes to call language clusters, or collocations, which are sequences of words that are usually used together.
- let’s get back to the initial sentence = vamos voltar à frase inicial
- in a specific way = de uma maneira específica
- with specific wording = com um palavreado específico
So what does it mean when you say,
“We have a lot of catching up to do.”?
Well, it basically means that we have a lot to talk about because we haven’t seen each other in a long time.
- what does it mean? = o que significa
- we have a lot to talk about = temos muito sobre o que conversar
- we haven’t seen each other in a long time = faz tempo que não nos vemos

Hi, Tim.
So good to know you’re back once I’ve been missing your English tips and wondered where you could be. Also, I’ve never been that familiar with Phrasal Verbs but I could learn a lot about them thanks to you.
As for me, well, I’d say I had to catch up with my work because I was way behind in it. What do I mean? I work as floor personnel for an outsourced company on which I’m serving the notice due to the hard work and mindless demandings that I just couldn’t stand them anymore and decided to quit. Also, I moonlight as a translator on the night shift. So, I’d better slow down and kick back. I do need take some vacation.
Yes, it seems we have a lot of catching up to do… LOL
