The last time we talked, I taught you how to use the phrasal verb “keep up with someone”, which means to maintain a certain _________ so you can remain level or equal with someone or with something.

However, that’s not the only _________ for the phrasal verbs “keep up”.

For example, here’s another meaning:

Do you remember the Boston marathon where _________ there was a terrorist attack this year?

Well, my student was there the year before; and he was on the _________ cheering _____ the marathon runners and listening to what other people around him were saying to encourage the runners.
See if you can hear them use this phrasal verb “keep up” in the following segment.

– Good job, gentlemen!
– Good, guys! Let’s keep it up!
– Woo-hoo! Way to go, guys!

Did you hear that? The woman said, “Come on! _________ it up!”

So that’s another meaning of the phrasal verb “keep up”. To “keep up an activity” means to continue – not _______ ______ , not stop doing – that activity.

Notice she did not just say, “Come on! Keep up!”; or “Keep up ______ the other runners!” Then she would be telling them to _________ the other runners and remain at the same level with them (like I taught last week).

But, instead, she said “Keep it up!”; because she was ____________ them to continue and to not give up.

Now be careful. We don’t use this meaning of the phrasal verb “keep up” before another verb. So you _______ say “keep up working”, for example. You don’t “keep up” doing something. (I’ll tell you how to say that in our next tip.)

And one more thing. The most common expression that uses the phrasal verb “keep up”, with this meaning, is the phrase “keep up the ________ ________ ”. You say that when you want someone to continue doing what they are doing because they are ____________ . You want to say that they are doing a good job, so you encourage them by saying “keep up the good work”.

• he was on the sidelines = ele estava no lado (“on the sidelines” também pode ser traduzido como “nos bastidores”, dependendo do contexto.)
• cheering them on [phrasal verb] = aplaudindo, torcendo por eles, encorajando-os
• listening to what other people around him were saying = escutando o que outras pessoas ao seu redor estavam dizendo
• to encourage the runners = para encorajar os corredores

Notice she did not just say, “Come on! Keep up!”; or “Keep up with the other runners!” Then she would be telling them to reach the other runners and remain at the same level with them (like I taught last week).

But, instead, she said “Keep it up!”; because she was encouraging them to continue and to not give up.

Now be careful. We don’t use this meaning of the phrasal verb “keep up” before another verb. So you can’t say “keep up working”, for example. You don’t “keep up” doing something. (I’ll tell you how to say that in our next tip.)
